Students who complete advanced placement exams (AP exams) with a minimum score of a 3 or higher may be awarded credit. Official exam score reports from College Board must be submitted to the Admissions Office for review. Download the exam equivalencies here.

SAT Scores

If you submit SAT scores that are <5 years old, you may be waived from taking certain placement tests.

  • A math SAT score of 530 or higher places you directly into college-level math and waives you from taking the math placement test.
  • A critical reading and writing SAT score of 480 or higher waives you from taking the reading placement test.
  • An essay SAT score range of 6-8 places you directly into college-level English and waives you from taking the writing placement test.

All SAT scores should be submitted to Admissions prior to or at the point of acceptance to better facilitate registering for first semester courses.

Earning Experiential Credit

NHTI offers a number of avenues for students with prior learning to gain college credit. You have to be matriculated into a program of study to request that prior credits or experience be evaluated and applied toward graduation requirements. The following options are available:

You will be granted college credit for military training, experience, or coursework that is recognized by the American Council on Education. If you are seeking credit for military experience, submit your military transcript to the Admissions Office.

College-level examination programs (CLEP) is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the U.S., helping you earn credit for what you already know. CLEP exams are available in 34 college-level subjects, and NHTI is a CLEP testing center.

Credit by Exam allows matriculated students to receive credit by passing a comprehensive exam of the course material. If you are seeking Credit by Exam, you have to be matriculated into an NHTI program and provide evidence that the course content has been mastered. Consult with your academic advisor to determine eligibility.

Application for Credit by Exam

The fee is $25 per credit hour. Grades will be either “pass” or “no pass,” with full course credit granted for a grade of “E” (pass). Since a traditional grade (A-F) is not entered, the Credit by Exam is not calculated into your GPA.

Credit for prior learning gives you the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge you have gained through life experiences and apply it towards credit in a degree/professional certificate/certificate program. To prepare for this option, you will develop a portfolio to be assessed by appropriate college personnel. You have to be matriculated in an NHTI program, and not all programs provide the experiential credit option. You should consult with department chairs, advisors, or program coordinators to determine if experiential credit is appropriate.
