What is Placement Testing?
All students entering programs, whether they plan to take courses full-time or part-time, are required to take ACCUPLACER® placement tests before registering for classes. Non-matriculated students who have been away from school for several years or are unsure of their skills are encouraged to take the placement tests.
What is ACCUPLACER®?
ACCUPLACER® tests a person’s knowledge in math, reading, writing and PC Applications. As part of the enrollment process at NHTI, these tests help identify a student’s strengths and needs in each subject area. The academic advisers and counselors at NHTI will use ACCUPLACER® test results along with information about a student’s academic background, goals, and interests to help select courses that match a student’s skill level and give him or her the best opportunities for success.
A student who has taken ACCUPLACER® and has scores that are more than three years old must take the placement test again.
If you have taken ACCUPLACER® at another location please bring your results to the Learning Center for evaluation.
How Does ACCUPLACER® Work?
Thanks to ACCUPLACER®’s online format, the test questions are based on an individual’s responses to each question answered. Questions increase or decrease in difficulty depending on how someone answers as he or she works through the test. ACCUPLACER® tests are untimed, so a person can move at a comfortable pace. It’s important to allow enough time to do your best and complete the test because the results are the key factor in determining the courses a student can take. The results will be available immediately after the test.
Do the scores count? Are the tests important?
Yes! The scores help identify academic strengths and challenges, and assist students and their academic advisor in course selection. Students who are placed at the correct course level, with an appropriate course load relative to their non-college responsibilities, are more likely to succeed in courses, complete the program, and enter the career of choice.
When should I schedule my tests?
Students admitted to a program must test before registering for courses. Testing appointments can be made throughout the year. The sooner students complete testing and register for courses, the sooner they will know their class schedule. Remember, the scores will help determine which courses a student can take. To schedule an appointment to test, call Lois Richard at (603) 271-6484 x4291 or x 4430 or the Learning Center at (603) 230-4027.
Is there a cost for Placement Testing?
The cost of ACCUPLACER® is $20.00. Payment will be taken at the Bursar’s Office, which is located in Sweeney Hall. Please show the receipt to the Learning Center staff at the time you are scheduled to take the test. You must also show a photo ID to the test proctor at the time of the test. Download a registration form here.
Which tests will I take? Should I study?
The Admissions Office makes all decisions regarding which tests will be taken, based on the information in a student’s application and transcripts. Students may be waived from one or more tests, depending on standardized test scores or college courses you have successfully completed. Students will be assigned tests in one or more of the following areas:
How long do the tests take?
Plan on 2-3 hours for testing, depending on how many tests are required and on the individual’s math skills and reading ability.
If testers have a disability and wish to request accommodations, please notify the Learning Center when scheduling testing. Call the NHTI Learning Center at (603) 230-4027.
You Can Prepare for ACCUPLACER®
It’s important that ACCUPLACER® scores accurately represent a person’s skills and knowledge. ACCUPLACER® offers tools and resources to help students prepare for the tests. Sharpening academic skills by answering sample test questions in reading, writing, and math can help someone to improve and boost confidence sitting down to take the actual tests. This exercise is especially helpful if someone been away from school for more than a year.
