Wheelchair Basketball Benefit Scheduled

Zech DeVits Portrait bu Susan HaasThe NHTI Campus Community is invited to the Annual Wheelchair Basketball Benefit is scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 4:00 pm in the Wellness Center Gym.  This event is held to benefit the Zech DeVits Memorial Equipment Fund to support students with disabilities who are in need of assistive technology.  Items awarded previously include digital recorders, voice-to-text software and text-to-voice software.

Two teams of players compete in wheelchairs in an exciting, action-packed basketball game.  The first team will be comprised of NHTI students who are taking part in the game as a dorm competition coordinated by Athletic Director Paul  Hogan. The second team is comprised of players from Granite State Independent Living (GSIL) and NHTI faculty, administrators and staff.  Our partners at GSIL are represented by Ken Hazeltine and by Mark Race, who also heads up the NH Spinal Cord Association.  Deb Smith will coordinate a Wheelchair Open Gym.

This event began when Zech DeVits, an NHTI student with disabilities, needed help refurbishing his wheelchair-accessible van.   Dr. Chuck Lloyd, now an NHTI administrator, helped to organize the first game along with Mark Race from GSIL.  Since Zech’s sudden passing in April 2005, this tradition has continued to honor Zech’s memory.

The Silent Auction will again be coordinated by the Disabilities Advisory Board, chaired by Professor Lucyann Zeller.  Watch for details about the Kick-Off Event to be held January 20.  Mindy Carlisle, Project Leader, will again offer a beautiful handcrafted quilt.  Visual Arts Department Head Susan Haas’ likeness of Zech (pictured) will be featured at both events and displayed in the Library.  Many campus clubs and organizations are co-sponsors.

To learn more about our event, please contact Mindy Carlisle, Disabilities Services Specialist, at mcarlisle@ccsnh.edu or 230-4000 x 4132.

Library Staff Finds Their Muse!

As part of the Library’s recent “Staff Time!” activities, Visual Arts Prof. Meghan Ambra worked with NHTI Library staff and friends on these paintings!  A great time was truly had by all!  (For a closer look at the paintings, visit the Library Gallery this month!)
