The Eyes Have It

On Tuesday April 22, The Eye -- NHTI's student literary magazine -- held a reception to herald the release of the new edition, and to honor this year's editors and contributors.

Kelsea HuckinsFaculty advisor Paula DelBonis-Platt introduced The Eye's student president Kelsea Huckins, who gave a short address thanking and praising the many contributors to the 2014 edition.  Pointing out that each piece accepted for The Eye had to earn the votes of at least three of the student editors -- each of whom had very different tastes in literature -- Huckins urged the authors to feel proud of their accomplishment.

Recognition of the rest of the Eye officers followed:

  • Vice-President Gunnar Mattson
  • Treasurer Courtney Larabee
  • Secretary Julia GruberBailey
  • Systems Managers Bryon Gilmartin
  • Communications Director Tyler Romprey

Visual Arts department head Susan Haas was called upon to recognize this year's cover artist Daniel Tavis, as well as Douglas Rouse and Michaella Wiss, who also contributed art to this year's edition.  The 2014 issue of The Eye is the first to incorporate color artwork.

Conny Von NordsiekThe inagural "You Are Not Alone" Prize was awarded to Conny Von Nordsiek for her essay about overcoming drug addiction.  It was presented by her professor, Dr. Anni McLaughlin.

Recognition of all the student contributors followed, along with brief readings from their work.

Earth Day / Campus Cleanup

Environmental action club and planted tree

The Environmental Action Club planted an Eastern Red Cedar just south of Grappone Hall on Earth Day, April 22.  Ronny Stelly, graduating Landscape Design senior, worked with Landscape Design Department Head Susanne Smith Meyer and NHTI's Landscape Manager Nat Haynes to determine the best location and type of tree.  The club dug the hole and planted the tree.

In September 2013 the club also purchased and planted a Balsam Fir near the Library/Gym.  Thanks to the Maintenance department for their help, and to Student Senate for funding this tree.

Last week, eight brave souls ventured out into the wintry temperatures to gather trash at the Environmental Action Club's 11th Annual Earth Day Campus Cleanup on April 16.  Thanks to those intrepid friends of the Earth, and to club members Kasey Bartnick, Alec Rucker, Derek Burton, Chris Kirk, Ashley Barr and Nick Metcalf -- who set up the table and staffed it all day -- for helping to make our campus look great!  Thanks also to the Maintenance Staff, who provided the supplies and picked up all the trash bags brought back by the participants, and to the Student Senate who funded coffee and bagels.

Campus Safety Information Corner

With the end of the school year fast approaching, the Campus Safety Department wants to make everyone aware that theft is often a crime associated with this time of year.  Spring brings warmer weather and vehicle windows are down or cracked, making the opportunity easier for unsuspecting victims.  Doors & windows to rooms are opened, making things visible and easy to grab.  Please be aware of your surroundings and valuables, and report any suspicious activity to the Campus Safety Department at 224-3287!
