Lance 'Bares All' for Childhood Cancer FundraiserOn March 29, NHTI's Fred Lance went bald. But don't worry -- it was deliberate, and it was for a good cause.
"Helpless is probably the last word I would use to describe fire fighters," says Fred. "We run into burning buildings when everyone else is running out. But in the face of cancer there is little we can do to 'protect life and property.' Until now. If losing my hair can help kids with cancer, sign me up." Fred chose to dedicate his effort to the memory of Ryan Oickle, son of George Oickle, a former NHTI student who took Cisco Academy courses from Fred. Ryan was diagnosed with cancer at age two, and lost his battle at age four. George himself contracted cancer in 2011, and passed away in 2012, leaving behind a wife and son. Fred originally set his personal fundraising goal at a modest $500, but later raised it to $5000. "I would rather fail miserably at $600 dollars than succeed at $500," he says. As it happens, he exceeded even the higher goal, raising $5030. The Fire Department as a whole raised over $23,000. Way to go, Fred! 'Play Ball' for Katie!
Games begin at 9:00 am and are scheduled every hour throughout the day, both outdoors on the campus quad (weather permitting) and indoors in the Wellness Center Gym. With each team trying to score as many runs as possible in three, five-minute innings, the pace of the tourney is frantic and sure to be a great time. There will be plenty of refreshments for players, and also raffles and a silent auction during the day. The Wiffle Ball Tournament is an annual fundraiser coordinated between NHTI and Community Bridges, a local non-profit agency that supports people with disabilities and their families. This year’s tournament will benefit a local 6-year-old girl named Katie who has survived cancer and two brain surgeries, but still suffers from a rare liver condition called Alagille Syndrome. Funds are raised by team registration fees and the silent auction. The registration fee is $100 from the team members, matched by $100 from a business sponsor. Local businesses are also contributing food for the tournament, gift certificates and other items to include in the auction, and cash. The event is open to the public; admission is by donation. All proceeds will go into an account for Katie’s family. For more information please contact the Student Life Office at 230-4045.
