Lynx Fall in Softball National Tournament;
Lemay Named Player of the Year
On Monday May 12, the NHTI women’s softball team fell in the first game of USCAA National Softball Tournament action in Akron, OH. The Lynx lost 6-2 to number ten-seeded Penn College.
The number seven-seeded Lynx were paced offensively by Kasie Tucker (Bow) with a homerun and a double, and Cassie Camire (Farmington) and Courtney Gilman (Penacook) with two hits each.
In the circle, Tori Lemay (Manchester) picked up the loss after allowing ten hits and six runs (three earned), while striking out seven in seven innings.
On Tuesday the Lynx came back to defeat number six-seeded Penn State Hazelton 5-4 in extra innings. Pitcher Tori Lemay went the distance, tallying 16 strikeouts over 8 innings, tying the USCAA Softball National Championship record.
The Lions of Penn State Hazleton fell behind late in the game, giving up runs in the fifth and sixth innings. However, in the top of the 7th Lions catcher Erin Dougherty smacked a 2-run double to tie the game at 4. NHTI catcher Sahara Brown (Barnstead) hit the game winning RBI single in the bottom of the 8th to plate Lindsey Hampson (Manchester) and secure the victory.
Later that same day, however, the Lynx fell to another Penn State team, losing what would prove to be their final game of the tournament to Penn State Mont Alto, 4-1. On the mound for NHTI, Lindsey Hampson went 4.2 innings giving up 4 runs (two earned). Offensively, Kasie Tucker once again led the Lynx, going 2 for 3 on the night to cap her solid tournament performance. NHTI finishes their season 26-13-1.
In other news, Tori Lemay was named a USCAA Second Team All-American and a USCAA All-Academic American. In addition, the YSCC named Lemay Player of the Year, and Sahara Brown an All Conference Selection. The Lynx' head softball coach Kerry Finnigan was named YSCC Coach of the Year.
