Course Records Broken at the NHTI/NEDD 5K

There were 386 runners and walkers who completed the 10th Annual NHTI / Northeast Delta Dental 5K Road Race on April 18.  The conditions were ideal for fast times, and both the men's and women's course records were broken by this highly competitive field.

Four time Olympic Nordic skier Chris Freeman was the honorary starter for the race.  Chris’ brother Justin, who has also competed in the Olympics as a Nordic skier, also decided to come to the race to challenge NHTI’s Nacho Hernando.  It turned out to be an epic battle between Freeman and Hernando.  Freeman tried to pull away from Nacho during the second half of the race, but the NHTI All American cross country star determinedly stayed a few yards behind the ex-Olympian.  Freeman won by a scant 6 seconds, and he lowered the course record from 15:42 to 15:17.  That is a pace of 4:56 per mile. Nacho finished second at 15:24, a pace of 4:58 per mile.

The woman’s race was not nearly as dramatic, but it featured an amazing performance by Jennifer Mortimer of New Loudon.  She was the 7th overall finisher, and lowered the course record from 17:30 to 16:48.  Mortimer was a two time All American runner at Boston College, and still holds the school’s track record for the 5,000 meter.

A number of NHTI students ran outstanding times.  Quinn Parker was 9th overall at 17:12, narrowly beating Greg Keilig who was 11th at 17:19.  Joe Bohi was 28th at 19:08, Oscar Castillo came in 42nd at 20:12, and Brian Fox was 44th at 20:39.  Coach Tom Walton was 2nd in his age group with a time of 21:12.  He ran a 6:50 pace at the age of 65!  Coach Beth Wilkes won her age group with a time of 22:51.  Chuck Lloyd ran a personal best time of 22:33.

And then there was THE COMPETITION  between Professors Fred King, Fred Lance, and Mike Moffett.  This was a tight race the entire way.  Moffett won with a time of 24:07.  King was just behind at 24:14, and Lance followed closely at 24:30.  (Since Moffett failed to beat King by more than 30 seconds, according to the terms of a pre-race wager, he now owes the Cross Country Team $100!)

Strout Hall won the dorm competition with a time of 1:03:49.  North Hall was second at 1:14:09 and South Hall was third at 1:18:56.
