NHTI Plays Ball for Seth
Seth Peake joins top Wiffle Ball fundraisers The Goonies in the Winner's Circle,
along with Leroy and Associate VP of Student Affairs Chuck Lloyd
Fourteen teams participated in the 14th Annual Charity Wiffle Ball Tournament on Saturday September 19, to help raise money for the family of Seth Peake, a 10-year old boy who was born with hemophilia. Each competing team paid a $100 registration fee, matched by $100 from a sponsor. Additional funds were raised through voluntary admission fees, donations, and a silent auction.
The Goonies were the team that raised the most money: $2300! They receive a free dinner from Alan's of Boscawen as their reward. The Waltham Weekend Warriors won the tournament, beating out Chuck Lloyds team in double-overtime!
All told, the tournament raised $7200 for Seth! Special thanks to Presenting Sponsor Southern NH University, and all the other businesses that helped make Seth's day a success! We look forward to seeing everyone next year for the 15th annual tournament!
Do you struggle with math? Does Chem Lab make you crazy? Is Physics ruining your GPA?
Gavitt Kerkel is here to help! Gavitt is the new coordinator of NHTI's Math Lab, part of the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), located in the Library. It's a free drop-in tutoring service available to all NHTI students.
"They way I look at it," says Gavitt, "students have already paid for this through their tuition. So they might as well take advantage of it."
A New Hampshire native, Gavitt got his Bachelor's degree in Physics at Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY. Although he calls his position with ACE his "first real job," he worked as a teaching assistant and tutor at Clarkson, so he has plenty of experience helping other students work their way through complex mathematical formulae.
But being a tutor is only part of Gavitt's job. As head of the Math Lab, he also has to coordinate the schedules of the 17 other tutors, who include both students and faculty.
The Math Lab provides tutoring in Math, Chemistry and Physics. Have problems you can't solve? Homework you can't do? If you just plain don't "get it"? Bring it to the Math Lab! Remember, it's free!
"We can help solve technical issues with online homework," says Gavitt. "I even teach a graphing calculator workshop."
Gavitt -- who also teaches at Bishop Brady High School -- claims to have very little free time. But what he has he devotes to amateur cartooning, video games ... "you know, nerd stuff." But hey, who better than a nerd to tutor people in math?
