Convocation is an annual campus-wide event to welcome new and returning students to campus and celebrate the beginning of the new academic year. Each year NHTI invites a guest speaker to Convocation. This year's speaker is author and Navy wife Sarah Smiley.
Sarah Smiley has a B.S. from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, and a M.A. in Mass Communications from the University of Maine. She frequently serves as an adjunct instructor at local universities and colleges, where she teaches writing and journalism.
Sarah is the author of a syndicated newspaper column, and of three memoirs: Dinner with the Smileys, I’m Just Saying, and Going Overboard. She has been featured in The New York Times Magazine, O Magazine, Parade Magazine, Good Housekeeping, Military Spouse Magazine and Newsweek. She has also been featured on the Today Show, Katie Couric, Nightline, CNN, CBS’s The Early Show, Fox News, MSNBC, and numerous local and national radio programs.
In 2014, Sarah was awarded the American Legion Auxiliary’s prestigious national Public Spirit Award.
Monday September 14
1:00 - 2:00 pm
Join us for a lively discussion of Convocation speaker Sarah Smiley’s 2013 book, Dinner with the Smileys -- the uplifting true story of a wife and mother’s yearlong experience inviting one new guest (from senators to school teachers, artists to professional athletes) to dinner for each week that her husband was deployed overseas. But it isn’t really about dinner. And it’s not about the military. It’s about 250 strangers who came together to help raise three boys (one on the cusp of adolescence) in the absence of their father. It’s a love story about marriage, motherhood, and the power of community.
