John J. Girald, DMD, joins the Allied Dental Education faculty this fall as the new Supervising Dentist all Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students at NHTI.
John earned a Bachelor’s degree in biology at Rutgers College in New Brunswick, NJ, and went on to the Fairleigh Dickinson School of Dental Medicine in Teaneck, NJ. He got his first taste of teaching at Fairleigh Dickinson as well; he was one of a handful of seniors who was asked to help train the incoming freshmen.
John did his residency at Yale/New Haven Hospital. Then he and a Fairleigh Dickinson classmate – who would later be his dental partner – operated the dental program at the Community Health Care Plan in New Haven, CT for about three years. John and his partner then set up a private practice in the coastal town of Branford, CT, where they practiced together since the mid-1980s.
In 2011, John and his wife moved to New Hampshire, where they have long had a summer home on Lake Sunapee. After spending some time “subbing” in various dental offices around the state (sitting in for dentists who were on sick leave, taking maternity time, etc), he found the NHTI position and thought it was a perfect fit. John looks forward to sharing his many years of clinical experience with new dental hygiene students, and to teaching Oral Pathology to second year students.
“Everyone in the department seems extremely helpful,” he says. “I’m sure they’ll guide me through the rough spots until I get up to speed.”
John enjoys kayaking, fishing, alpine skiing, and physical fitness. In fact, he is a devotee of P90X, an “extreme home fitness” regimen developed by trainer Tony Horton and practiced by such diverse personalities as Oprah Winfrey and Paul Ryan.
Welcome to NHTI, Dr. G. We’re sure you’ll “fit” right in.
