This year the Alternative Spring Break Club traveled to New Orleans, LA (NOLA) to help out in various parts of the community. Some of the projects they were involved in were: realigning, cleaning and documenting headstones at the Chalmette National Cemetery; installing energy efficient light bulbs in houses within the community; painting classrooms at the Einstein Charter School; and working at the warehouse of an organization called The Green Project that reuses reclaimed building materials and paint and resells them to the community.
The students decided to do an extra service project on their night off walking dogs from a well-known rescue organization called the Villalobos Rescue Center. The students also took the opportunity to learn more about the culture by visiting museums and touring the city. They also learned about the area and how it was affected by Hurricane Katrina from seeing the devastation within the community firsthand.
At the end of the week, NHTI's Curtis Williams was named Volunteer of the Week out of all the schools that were in town that week through the Break A Difference program. Way to go, Curtis!
