The annual Zech DeVits Wheelchair Basketball Benefit -- held on Wednesday February 3rd in the Wellness Center Gym -- proved exciting as always this year, and once again achieved its goal of raising several thousand dollars for assistive technology for NHTI students with disabilities.  Money was raised through donations, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle; admission to the game itself was free.

The StroutiesThe Combined Capital Wheelers/NHTI All-Stars team, consisting of NHTI faculty and staff led by Captain Paul Hogan, plus representatives of event sponsor Granite State Living (GSIL) led by co-captains Mark Race and Ken Hazeltine, faced off against a series of four NHTI student teams:  the Strouties (right) led by Capt. Colby Chaput, Notorious North (below) led by Capt. Kate Andritz, Super South led by Capt. Ashley Perisol, and last year's defending champions Mikey's Pick-up Team led by Capt. Mike Martineau.

Notorious NorthThe Wheelers jumped out to an early lead over the student teams.  Though the students battled back to near parity in later quarters, the Wheelers ultimately prevailed.

Referees Dayvon Russell and Michael Dejesus kept the play fast and clean, while announcer Scott Perry provided the play-by-play.  Halftime entertainment was provided by the NHTI Dance Team led by Coach Shameca Brown.

Time out was taken to recognize the leadership and consistent support of the Wheelchair Basketball Benefit of Paul Hogan, Deb Smith, Lucyann Zeller, Jeanne Duford and Heidi Schmidt, as well as Ken Hazeltine of GSIL and Jeremy Blaiklock, volunteer videographer.  Previous honorees have included Chuck Lloyd, Mindy Carlisle and Mark Race of GSIL.

To all others who were involved, thanks for keeping Zech's legacy alive!
