Wheelin' for $$
Tuesday's Wheelchair Basketball Benefit game -- delayed by a week due to the Great Blizzard of January 27 -- may not have been quite as thrilling as the Patriots' squeaker victory over the Seahawks, but it came darn close.
Chuck Lloyd faces down the opposition.
An NHTI faculty/staff team, backed by players from event sponsor Granite State Independent Living, squared off against student squads representing the three res halls and a "pick-up" team. The dorm squads dominated the first three quarters, immediately pulling ahead of the faculty staff team which seemed unable to close the gap. But the faculty/staff team rallied in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 16-all and then pulling ahead in the final minutes to clinch the victory!

NHTI's Wheelchair Basketball Benefit is an annual event supporting the Zech DeVitts Memorial Fund for assistive technologies for NHTI students with disabilities. Beverly Boggess of NHTI's Disabilities Services program reports that this year's event raised about $1200 through admissions, the accompanying Silent Auction, a 50/50 raffle and donations. The Student Senate voted to support the event with an additional $1000 in matching funds.
Admissions' Tom Warner lines up a shot.
Proceeds are used to help purchase assistive technology for NHTI students with disabilities, such as digital recorders, and text-to-voice and voice-to-text software. All qualified NHTI students with documented disabilities are encouraged to apply for assistive technology through the Zech DeVits Memorial Equipment Fund.
