A study of fiction focusing on elements and themes of the short story art form in stories written in the past 150 years. Through close reading, lectures, and discussions, stories are placed in the contexts of literary trends and periods. Biographical information may also be studied to gain a better understanding of the unique styles and perspectives of individual authors. (Prerequisite: ENGL 101C or equivalent with a grade of C or higher, or permission of the department chair. An introductory-level literature course is highly recommended.)
