NHTI Offers Teaching/Training Certificate Program

Concord – This fall, NHTI, Concord's Community College, is offering a non-credit certificate program in teaching and training through its on-campus Business Training Center. The program, "Teaching in the Classroom and Beyond: Methods and Techniques," consists of five core courses and four electives. These courses are geared to any professional who is interested in enhancing their teaching skills. These skills are also applicable to the development and delivery of effective training and/or presentations at conferences and meetings as well as supporting the learning needs of any organization.
The full teaching/training certificate includes all five core courses plus any two electives. Students are also welcome to take courses individually. The program utilizes an online learning management system as a resource; therefore basic computer skills and internet access are required for successful completion.
Certificate cost: $395. Individual courses: $65.

Overview of Teaching Techniques - September 28, 2011, 6:00 - 8:30 pm
The art of teaching, preparation of material and effective presentation will be discussed. The principles of effective public speaking will be demonstrated. PowerPoint technology and other teaching/learning tools will be discussed. This course is ideal for those who are interested in teaching in their workplace, institutions of higher education (college level) and beyond. -
Essentials of Adult Learning - October 5, 2011, 6:00 - 8:30 pm
Participants will be introduced to principles and best practices associated with adult learning. This course will focus on how adults approach learning, what their priorities are, what motivates them to learn and what teaching styles work best for them. Practical techniques will be offered for establishing a learning environment, assessing learning and interests, and establishing course objectives. -
Web 2.0 Technology Tools for Organizing, Collaborating, Teaching and Learning - October 12, 2011, 6:00 - 8:30 pm
This course will provide an overview of Web 2.0 technologies which facilitate and enhance interactivity between learners and the instructor to create a richness of learning experiences and peer to peer collaboration. Participants will be enrolled in a Blackboard site to view and practice different technology tools after the workshop. Tools include:- Learning Management Systems (Blackboard and Moodle)
- Blogs, Wikis, YouTube
- Social/Career networking and Bookmarking sites (Facebook, LinkedIn, Delicious)
- Other no cost open source technologies (Google Apps)

Creative Teaching: Diverse Methods for Diverse Learners - October 19, 2011, 6:00 - 8:30 pm
This class will introduce creative teaching styles to be employed in or out of the classroom. Traditional and non-traditional teaching methods will be discussed and evaluated. Different options varying from technology to layman tools will be explored. Instructor will speak from experience as to what methods have been most effective in their classroom and why. These techniques can be applied to the elementary as well as secondary level. Participation is encouraged and recommended. -
I am a Teacher: Evaluating your Teaching Style - November 30, 2011, 6:00 - 9:00 pm
This capstone project provides an opportunity for participants to share a self-designed teaching tool or presentation which incorporates the best practices of the program. Through peer and instructor feedback, an individual evaluation and improvement plan will be given to each participant highlighting strengths and areas for improvement. (Note: Cannot be taken as individual course.) -
Web 2.0 - Practical, Hands-on Application - October 26, 2011, 6:00 - 8:30 pm
This course will provide an opportunity for the learner to apply one of the Web 2.0 tools in a computer lab setting. This will provide participants the opportunity to utilize one of the Web 2.0 tools as an option in their capstone project. -
Cultural, Linguistic and Generational Diversity in the Classroom - November 2, 2011, 6:00 - 8:30 pm
Explore the challenges and opportunities faced by both students and teachers in classrooms with cultural, linguistic and generational diversity. Participants will discover tools and techniques that promote classroom and content accessibility for students and will build their resource base for a more holistic approach to the teacher-student relationship. Questions and concerns are welcome! -
Classroom Management 101 - November 9, 2011, 6:00 - 8:30 pm
The fundamentals of classroom management at the college level are based upon the effective communication of goals and expectations as well as a willingness to articulate and reinforce behavioral expectations. Keeping students focused and wanting to learn is a challenge for any teacher. Explore strategies that encourage student involvement while keeping the focus on learning outcomes. In this course you'll learn how to keep the class on task, manage time to achieve the desired outcomes and re-direct interruptions in a positive way. -
Helping Students Help Themselves - November 16, 2011, 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
New teachers/trainers often expect students to be self-regulated, and become frustrated by their lack of understanding of how to be productive. Left unchecked, this frustration can cause tension in the teaching/learning environment, limiting the amount of learning that takes place. Utilizing mindfulness meditation techniques, teachers/trainers can become more responsive and less reactive, and communicate with students in a manner that engages them in learning experiences and promotes emotional intelligence, including self-awareness, flexibility, and resilience.
