Campus Compact for New Hampshire Honors Three at NHTI for Community Service

Concord – Three members of the NHTI community have been recognized by the Campus Compact for New Hampshire for their efforts in civic involvement and volunteering. The three received 2009 awards at an event in Nashua. NHTI President Lynn Kilchenstein said the awards illustrate the recipients' longtime commitment to service to the community.

"These awards recognize those strive to improve the lives of others," says Kilchenstein. "These members of our community have had a transformative impact on other individuals and our community as a whole."

President's Leadership Award, Laura LeBlanc - This NHTI student has been very active in student life while maintaining an outstanding grade point average. She has been the Co-President of the Campus Activities Board, a member of the student leadership program, an orientation leader, and she has given tours at open houses. Laura also organized and served as the coordinator for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Challenge. She completed her internship in the Office of Student Life and participates in as many volunteer and community service opportunities while serving as a student athlete on the women's Basketball Team. Laura a completed a semester-long service learning experience at the McKenna House Homeless Shelter.

President's Good Steward Award, Shirley Rennie - NHTI's Director of Health Services also teaches in the Nursing Department and is advisor to the Student Nurses' Association. Shirley founded of the campus Service Learning Team. Shirley has worked with her students to coordinate the Wellness Fair, a 14-year project that has grown into one of the largest and best attended events on campus. Other projects include annual tuberculin clinics, blood pressure clinics for the homeless, and disaster preparedness exercises. Shirley has been a key participant for a number of grants, workshops and speakers around service learning coming to campus.

President's Community Partner Award, Northeast Delta Dental - Northeast Delta Dental has been a key supporter of many academic and student initiatives at NHTI. NEDD has been instrumental in the planning of benefit road races, athletic events, and various student activities. Northeast Delta Dental also supports students in the classroom by providing instruction and scholarships, and by funding a faculty chair in the College's dental education program.

Founded in 1997, Campus Compact for New Hampshire is a statewide consortium of college and university presidents and private sector partners who are united in their commitment to the civic purposes of higher education. Their mission is to be a catalyst to integrate community service and civic responsibility throughout the academic and student life goals of its member institutions.
