Writing Conferences: Come See Us!

You can come see us to talk about anything connected to writing...

  • brainstorming ideas for a piece of writing
  • moving past writer's block
  • figuring out how to approach a writing assignment
  • revising a piece of writing from any class
  • receiving objective feedback
  • becoming comfortable with the mechanics of English grammar
  • learning about the research process and the APA format

A writing conference is...

  • a conversation about writing
  • a collaborative experience between a writer and a reader
  • a time to focus on writing issues YOU want to talk about

A writing conference is NOT...

  • an occasion for someone to tear apart your paper
  • a time when someone tells you what to change and how you must do it

Some examples of what you might bring to the Writing Center:
lab reportspeech essay
abstractreading responsememo
literature analysisresearch paperletter to an editor
poemoutlinenarrative
resumejournalarticle summary
observation reportpersonal statement for
a college application
cover letter for
a summer job

Preparing for your conference:

  • If you have started a draft, bring it.
  • If you are working on a class assignment, bring the assignment description.
  • If revising a draft, consider what type of feedback you'd like from your reader.
  • Consider using the appointment as a mini-deadline, so that you have something in writing before the paper is due.
  • If you are beginning or in the middle of a paper, but don't know where you are going with it, make an appointment or drop in.
