NHTI Italy Itinerary
June 3 - 12, 2008

DAY 1 • DEPARTURE • Our educational journey begins on an overnight flight to Rome.

DAY 2 • ROME • Benvenuti! Arrive at the airport, step onto our private coach and meet our local English-speaking guide who will introduce us to the Eternal City on a panoramic tour. This tour will acquaint you with the layout of the city before checking into our hotel. Highlights include the antiquities of the Roman Forum, the delightfully extravagant Trevi Fountain, and the world-renowned Spanish Steps. After check in, relax and enjoy dinner at your leisure on your first night in Rome. Overnight in Rome.

DAY 3 • ROME • Following breakfast, we'll meet our English-speaking guide and transfer using our 1 day metro passes to begin our full-day walking tour. We'll begin at St. Peter's Square, framed by Bernini's masterful columns and visit Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel, which showcases the restored creation frescoes of Michelangelo. We'll learn about the architecture of the majestic St. Peter's Basilica and view Michelangelo's Pietà. We'll take a break at a caffè to enjoy lunch and discuss the sights of the morning. This afternoon, we'll continue with our local guide on a walking tour to Rome's ancient city center. Walking in the steps of the ancient Romans through the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum, the heart of ancient Rome. Tonight explore another dinner location of your own selection! Overnight in Rome.

DAY 4 • ROME • TUSCANY • You'll have the morning is free to wander before leaving Rome. With an early start you'll have time to visit the beautiful former villa Borghese, the eerie Crypt of the Cappuccini Monks, or shop the famous Via dei Condotti for famous designer fashions. After lunch, we'll meet up again to board our coach and begin our picturesque drive into the hills of Tuscany. We'll arrive at our Tuscan farmhouse accommodations in time for an afternoon walking tour of the vineyards on the property. Explore the area on your own hike or relax and just take in the views before we meet for a group dinner featuring the local cuisine and wine. Overnight in Tuscany.

DAY 5 • TUSCANY • SIENNA • SAN GIMIGNANO • After breakfast, we'll depart for medieval Siena where you'll have free time to explore the beautiful square of Piazza del Campo and Siena Cathedral. Then we're off to a local winery to experience our wine tasting and have a light lunch including local produce. On our way back to the farmhouse, we'll stop in the lovely village of towers, San Gimignano for a short self-guided visit. Then we'll return to our location in the Tuscan countryside for another group dinner. Overnight in Tuscany.

DAY 6 • TUSCANY • FLORENCE • After breakfast we begin our short journey to Florence, the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. Before arriving in the historic center of Florence, we'll stop at Piazza le Michelangelo for a panoramic view of the city. We'll check into our hotel and meet our local English speaking guide for a walking tour to explore all of the highlights this renaissance city has to offer. We'll learn about the history of the Duomo, the Pitti Palace, Piazza della Signoria, Dante's District and the Ponte Vecchio, a beautiful 14th-century covered bridge. Our walking tour ends at the Uffizi Gallery, where we have reservations and tickets for a self- guided tour to view the most important Italian and European paintings of the 13th-18th centuries. Enjoy the remainder of the day and dinner at your leisure. Overnight in Florence.

DAY 7 • FLORENCE • LUCCA/PISA • This morning after breakfast, a group reservation and tickets are arranged to visit the Accademia, home of Michelangelo's masterpiece David. The remainder of the morning is free to sip cappuccino in one of the city's delightful sidewalk caffès or sample homemade gelato as you wander the back streets of Florence. Be sure to visit the great flea markets for buys on Italian leather. This afternoon you will have an opportunity to either take an excursion to visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa or the charming fortress town of Lucca. Upon returning, enjoy dinner and the evening at leisure. Overnight in Florence.

DAY 8 • FLORENCE • VENICE • Following breakfast, we'll depart early for Venice. On arrival we'll check into the hotel and meet our local guide. Then we'll transfer to Venice Island to begin our half day walking tour of Venice, viewing the Grand Canal, Piazza San Marco, known as "the drawing room of the world," the Campanile and the Rialto. Balance of the day is free and dinner is at your leisure. Overnight in Venice Mestre. Venice

DAY 9 • VENICE • Enjoy a full day at your leisure in Venice. Perhaps you'll visit some art galleries, browse Venice's unique glass shops, or just stroll past the canals and bridges of this luminescent city. Be sure to get out and enjoy the magic of Venice at night. Linger over a Campari and savor every last minute on our last evening in Italy. Overnight in Venice Mestre.

DAY 10 • RETURN • 'O me miserum.' It's time to depart! After breakfast, we'll meet our coach & assistant for transfer to Venice airport.
