Instructor: Cynthia Bjerklie
Cynthia Bjerklie has been working in health care since 1975. She has held a variety of clinical and administrative positions including work as a nurse’s aide, a medical assistant, medical office manager, practice manager, and director of operations for a multi-specialty clinic in California. Ms. Bjerklie has been teaching medical assisting, medical transcription and professional medical coding since the early 1990’s.
Until recently, she worked as a Coding Educator at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, NH. She left this position to pursue work on her family’s small farm. Additionally, she has taught courses at Lebanon College, White Mountains Community College and she is currently a member of the medical assisting faculty at the Community College of Vermont. She is a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and CPC-I (instructor).
This course will prepare learners for entry level employment in the health care field as receptionists, schedulers and/or secretaries in doctors’ offices, clinics, and/or other health care facilities. A variety of teaching methods including lecture, group and individual exercises, online tools and hands-on experiences will be used. Learners will be exposed to the many facets of medical office administration, including reception, scheduling appointments, writing and processing correspondence, legal and ethical concerns in health care, patient services, and telephone and interpersonal communication. The Blackboard learning system will be used for part of the course work; therefore basic computer skills and Internet access are required.
