Student Computer Usage Policy

NHTI regulates the use of computer facilities, including networks, for use by NHTI students and college employees only. Priority is given to those doing academic work. In addition to the following rules, student computer users are expected to comply with the conduct guidelines and all policies specified in the NHTI Student Handbook. Violations are subject to the NHTI Judicial Policy.

  • NHTI computer facilities exist for the purpose of supporting learning and academic activities. Please be considerate of other students’ rights by being quiet.
  • Interference with the academic work of another student, faculty, or staff member is prohibited.
  • Use of the computer facilities to support activities of personal profit, commerce, non-college related fund raising, political campaigns, or illegal purposes are prohibited.
  • Students must be prepared to show valid NHTI student identification when requested by Lab Monitor, NHTI Security, or other NHTI staff.
  • The sending, receiving, browsing, viewing, storing, displaying, publishing or transmitting threatening, obscene, pornographic or offensive materials is prohibited.
  • Access to or distribution of information from sites that contain sexual implications, racial slurs, gender-specific comments or any comments that offensively addresses someone’s race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, or marital status is prohibited.
  • Eating is prohibited in computer facilities at all times. Beverages in securely covered containers are allowed. Dispose of waste properly.
  • Do not place books or personal belongings on any printer, monitor, or computer equipment.
  • Students are responsible for cleaning up any area which they use- this includes discarding scrap paper or printouts in their proper recycling or trash receptacle.
  • Loading or installation of any software/programs/games on hard drive is prohibited. In addition, any alteration of system setting or configuration is prohibited. High network traffic may result in temporary prohibitions including, but not limited to: gaming, instant messaging, downloading, and email.
  • Unauthorized entry or transfer of electronic files or copyrighted software or materials is prohibited.
  • Unauthorized use of another individual’s identification and password is prohibited.
  • Students must deactivate cell phones and electronic pagers while using the computer lab.
  • The connection of outside equipment to NHTI computer equipment is prohibited unless specific authorization is granted by NHTI faculty or staff.
  • Students are advised that an automatic nightly procedure resets defaults and program attributes on college computer clients, erasing any documents or files saved to the machine. Students are reminded to save documents to a flash or floppy drive, or to an academic server, as any documents saved to a machine cannot be restored.
  • NHTI extends to students free printing privileges for a maximum of 350 pages per semester, with additional printing privileges available for purchase. Please refer to the NHTI Print System Policy in the Student Handbook.
  • Additional policies governing computer usage by departments in dedicated computer labs may also be established and enforced.
