Women's and Men's Basketball Mid Season Review
As the men's and women's NHTI basketball teams take off some time to enjoy the holidays, now is a better time that ever to review the first half of the season, and preview the second half.

The NHTI women's basketball team enters the holiday break with a record of 8-4 coming off of a tough loss to Manchester (CT) Community College. The Capitals started off strong winning the first five of there six games. Since this time NHTI has slumped slightly and have lost three of the last six games. A reason for this recent slump could include the increased toughness of NHTI's schedule.

When asked about the teams strengths throughout the first half of the season Coach Shelley Winters talked about the team's depth and there desire to grow. She also talked about how the team wants to continue to learn and be challenged and are willing to make adjustments to be successful. This is certainly a good sign as Coach Winters tries to lead her team back to the USCAA championship tournament for the sixth time in seven years.

Senior center Jen Roy (Manchester) is leading the Capitals averaging nearly 20 points and 12 rebounds a game. Also playing well this season has been Sarah McKeen (Dunbarton), Joy Burge (Wilton), Katie Faucher (Manchester), Amanda Manifold (Meredith), Cathie Murphy (Bradford), and Lyndi Trofatter (Newmarket). The team has also seen it's fair share of injuries with Ashley Leighton (Center Strafford) seeing zero playing in the first half, and Kaila Rubin (Hillsboro) seeing very limited playing time.

"The areas that we need to work on during the second half of the season are playing together, working hard at all times and staying focused. We need to gel as a team, work hard in practices to prepare for a very challenging second semester, and remember that its all about the team and being ready for the YSCC tournament," states Winters.

The Capitals get back into action on January 6th when they travel to Briarcliffe College in NY.

The NHTI men's basketball enters the holiday break with an impressive record of 11-4. The Capitals enter the break coming off of a big win versus Briarwood College. Opposite of the lady Capitals the men's started out shaky and have dramatically improved since. The Capitals stared out 0-2, but have won 11 of 13 since, including there current streak of five in a row.

"We improved every day right up to the end of the semester. Our skill set is solid and varied. Our offensive and defensive balance makes our team a tough opponent to prepare for," says Coach Paul Hogan on the first half of this season.

The Capitals ultimate goal this season includes winning the USCAA championship which they did back in 2005.

Freshman Ryan Lambert (Derry) has lead the Capitals offensive attack averaging about 18 points a game, including three 3-pointers. Also playing strong has been Stephan Roberts (Orlando, FL), Lucien Gentes (Keene), Max Stisser (Manchester), John Hatcher (Windham), CJ Arsenault (Hampton), Tony Ford (Somersworth), and Houston Green (Londonderry). Green has been tremendous on the glass averaging about six rebounds a game in some-what limited playing time. The Capitals are hoping the return of Billy Stowell (Exeter), and the recent addition of Curtis Brown (Palm Garden, FL) will help propel them up to the top of the coaches ranking poll. In the most recent poll NHTI climbed from 10th to 9th.

When asked about the second half Hogan added "We need to continue to develop at both ends of the floor. The holiday break will provide a real test for our team to re-connect in early January and pick up where we left off. Offensive balance and defensive rebounding continue to be areas we strive to improve."

The NHTI men also get back into action on January 6th when they travel to Briarcliffe College in NY.

Women's Soccer Ties VT Tech 0-0 in 2x Overtime
The Women's Soccer team kicked off play against conference team Vermont Tech. The Capital's controlled the game, but were not able to get a goal past VTC keepers Jessica Jettie and Shannon Leland. At the end of two overtimes the scored remained 0-0. The Capitals were able to get 27 shots on goal versus VTC who only managed one shot on goal. When VTC starting keeper Jettie was injured, that forced them to move Leland into net. VTC only had 11 players on the roster; therefore this caused them to play a player down for a short while. This made it easier for NHTI keeper Katie Granquist to do her job. The Capital defense was outstanding, but the offense just couldn't get a whole lot going. The team is just happy to come out with one point rather than zero. The Capitals next game is Thursday at Dean College.

Men's Soccer Over VT Tech, 2-0
The NHTI Men's Soccer team also started off the year against Vermont Tech. NHTI made VTC play a very physical game. In the end the Capitals pulled out the victory 2-0 over VTC. NHTI first scored about eight minutes into the game. This goal was scored by John Broek (Pembroke) and assisted by Josh Smith (Boscawen). The Capitals second goal came about halfway through the second half. Amsal Alic (Concord) and Travis Small (Douglas, MA) set up Tyler LaRoche (Raymond) for the score. Others Capitals with outstanding games included Andrew Cook (Deerfield) for his defense and goalkeeper Brandon Dyrkacz (Raymond) for saving the shutout. NHTI next hits the field Tuesday to face the Community College of Rhode Island.
