Academic Advising
Matriculated students (those formally admitted into a program) will be assigned an academic advisor by their department. The advisor may be the department head or another faculty member in the department. The advisor will assist students in a variety of ways, including course selection, evaluation of academic progress and referrals to support services. Non-matriculated students (those NOT formally admitted into any program) may receive assistance in course selection and academic planning from the Academic Advising Office in Sweeney Hall, Room S-148. Note: any student who has been suspended from his/her program is considered to be in non-matriculated status and may seek assistance from the Academic Advising Office if he/she wishes to take courses prior to requesting re-admission to his/her program. Students taking courses through the Division of Continuing Education (DCE) may receive assistance from the DCE Office. Students whose first language is not English may receive assistance from the Cross-cultural Education Office.

Are You Matriculated?
A student is considered matriculated if he/she has formally applied and been accepted into a degree, diploma, professional certificate or certificate program by NHTI's Admissions Office. Applications may be obtained through the Admissions Office or the Division of Continuing Education. A student is considered non-matriculated if not formally admitted to a program. Non-matriculated status does not prevent a student from taking credit courses. Credits earned during non-matriculated status that are required as part of the program to which the student is formally admitted in a later semester may be applied to that program. Any student who has been suspended from his/her program is considered to be in non-matriculated status and may seek assistance from the Academic Advising Office if he/she wishes to take courses prior to requesting re-admission to his/her program. Advantages to becoming matriculated:

  1. You follow the certificate or degree program as outlined in the admissions catalog or Division of Continuing Education brochure for the year in which you matriculate. If a course you have taken is replaced by a new requirement, you may or may not be required to take the new course pending department head approval.
  2. You get registration preference over non-matriculated students (during the registration period) for major field courses.
  3. You are assigned an academic advisor in your department who will assist you in course selection and academic planning as long as you are in the program.
  4. You are eligible to apply for Financial Aid.
